The 80% Rule: How to Stay Consistent When Life Gets Messy

Here we are, almost to Friday, and what a week it’s been! I’m sure many of you are feeling it, too.

Maybe your nine-to-five is taking every last bit of energy you have. Maybe you’re dealing with family issues, your dishwasher broke, you’re not feeling well, or life is simply throwing a little too much your way.

Whatever it is, sometimes just getting through the day feels like an accomplishment.

And when you’re working on becoming a better version of yourself, it can be difficult to continuously show up for your goals when life keeps getting in the way.

I’ll admit, today I didn’t get my workout in. I wasn’t feeling great, I worked really late, and by the end of the day, I just didn’t have it in me. And while that’s something I want to work on, I also recognize that being gentle with yourself is part of the process.

Not every day is going to be perfect. You’re not going to check off every item on your to-do list or hit every milestone you’ve set for yourself.

One thing I’ve been doing during this Winter Arc sprint is aiming for consistency while giving myself a little breathing room. My goal is to show up every day, but realistically, I’m shooting for about 80%.

Because life happens. Some days you’re exhausted. Some days work takes over. Some days you simply need to rest.

And that’s okay.

The important thing is not allowing one missed day to turn into a week of giving up on yourself.

So today, I want you to think about how you respond when you start feeling that slump. How do you push yourself when you need a little extra motivation? And if you’ve taken a few too many days off, how do you find your way back?

Maybe it’s adjusting your expectations. Maybe it’s taking a smaller step. Or maybe it’s recognizing that you need a day to recharge.

There’s no perfect answer, but there is always another opportunity to show up for yourself.

As we head into the weekend, take a little time to reflect. Where are you making progress? Where are you starting to slip? And what can you do differently next week?

Remember, this sprint isn’t about perfection. It’s about becoming someone who keeps showing up, even when life gets messy.

Wishing you all the best as we continue through our Winter Arc. Give yourself some grace, keep moving forward, and we’ll check back in next week.
